Tablet Woven Garters

Red garter closeup
Red garter overview
These garters are made of 30/2 silk threaded through 20 cards (total of 80 threads).  The pattern is the simulated satin pattern from braid 423 in the Museum of London collection (Crowfoot, Textiles & Clothing, 133).  The pattern for this braid has been redacted by Carolyn Priest-Dorman.  Because half the pack of cards remains idle each turn, the garters are much narrower and much denser than might be expected.  One is shorter than the other, as I reached a point where another reversal of the pack was needed for the shorter garter and decided to end it instead of making the reverse.

Overall view of red garters
These garters are made of 16/2 linen threaded through 12 cards (total of 48 threads).  This braid has weftwise stripes as seen in the Museum of Lond braid 449 (Crowfoot, 133) also redacted for modern use by Carolyn Priest-Dorman.  The pattern involves groups of three cards threaded alternately S and Z (SSSZZZ...etc), leading to the slight differences in the direction of the twist in the cords (and a lengthwise ridge between the groups of 3).  Half the threads on each card are one color, and half are the other color.  Therefore as the cards are turned continuously forward, the weftwise stripes appear depending on which color is currently facing upwards.
